Another country heard from....
Marie in Austria!
Hello. Gruss Gott!!!!

Wie Geht's?  Es geht mir gut!!! (How are you?....I am doing fine!!) cool huh!!! Live from the back woods of Klausen-Leopoldsdorf, Austria.  It's Marie Lively..with my monthly report.. well let's see where do I begin. When I first arrived here in Austria, my host family greeted me at the airport, then it was off to Linz, Austria to go to language camp for two weeks.  That was a lot of fun. It gave me the chance to meet all of the other exchange students living in Austria, and we all got the chance to become really close.  There are a lot of us..about 30 or so.  Everyone is really great though.  The language camp did teach me the basics of German, which is goodbecause I'm telling you, this language is not easy.  But I'm learning slowly.  You see there is  a difference between GERMAN German and AUSTRIAN German.  The Austrians love to shorten everything, and use lots of dialects that don't appear in my translation dictionary.  So that is a big challenge here.  My host family is really great, and very helpful with everything.  My host father is an English teacher..so he's thrilled to have someone to help him grade his English papers..oh boy!!!! My school is okay..not bad. I know..just different.  But it's the kind of different I don't like.  My friends at school are really nice though, and even though it's hard to understand a lot..every day get's easier and easier.  My school is located in Baden, which is about 40 minutes by bus from
my little village.  (Yes, and I have to rise with the rooster at 5:30 every morning to catch my wonderful ride to school) Viel spaps!!!(Much Fun!!)  But Baden is beautiful, and there is much to do there.   The one Austrian custom that I won't be bringing home with me though is the fact that I have school on Saturday!  AHHHH!!!! But sometimes we have Rotary Weekends, and then..no
school!!  The last one was about 3 weeks ago at a place in the Alps called Tauplitz. And after 3 hours of hiking I made it to the top of the Großer Tragl, a mountain in the Alps.  There was some snow,a nd that was fun to play in, but I was not looking forward to the trip back down.  I was ready for a helicopter to come and get me.  Needless to say, that didn'T happen,a nd I have scars to prove it.the rocks move more on the way down  funny how that works!!!! But I had lots of FUN!  I'm doing a lot to keep myself occupied.

On Monday nights I am taking an intensive German course in Baden, and on Weds, and Thurs. nights I am taking dance classes (ballet, and jazz) in Vienna.  I LOVE VIENNA!!!! It is so beautiful.  And so much fun..lots of clubs and places to go. This next weekend I am going to visit a friend of mine there.  She is also an exchange student from Washington.  We are going to a Mexican Restaurant .  I NEED REAL FOOD!!!! The foods here is not particularly to my liking.  A lot of FATTY meats and cheeses. Some of it is okay, but I would love a big chicken enchilada, or a chicken Caesar salad!!! MMMMM!!! My host family always is making me eat,and they think I am going to starve to death just because eat frankfurters and a loaf of bread with every meal.  But I'm adjusting, and the chocolate here makes up for the bad food..mmmmm good.  Well what else.  I haven't really had the chance to get homesick yet, but there are times when I miss home and my family and friends.  Of course.  I am here though having the time of my life and I can't wait until I speak the language!!!! Well I guess that's all for now..i have to go to my German course, so Tschuss!!!!! Auf Wiedersehen!!! And all that stuff!!!
