Yes, this is the first weekend after two weeks of hell . . . No it's not that bad, but the time there is tough. Lot's of them are kinda nuts - we're paras and we are the best! Whatever you do the first week is wrong and it's your fault. We took a coach when we received our equipment and for going to the dentist for a general check. Every distance no matter how long we'll be marching since then.
Our group leader is a maniac. We are his first group to become soldiers and he gives orders just to yell at us minutes later to do it another way. What a sucker. The other instrctors are o.k., hard but fair.
Wednesday we headed out for the manouver areas for the first time just helmets, G36 and this pistol belt. Tiring if you are not used to it. Thursday we went for our first march with ALL our stuff (approx. 50-60 pounds) and covered about 7 miles eventhough we were supposed to run only half of the distance. And oh wonder we were able to run a 100 meters and 400 meters the morning after - Thursday night I doubted that I could ever get up again after being in bed.
Next week, Monday to Wednesday we'll march with all our stuff to the shooting range and learn how to use this f*** heavy gun. This will be around 10 miles. Hope this time everyone will arrive the goal - last time two guys passed out and had to be picked up by medics - heat stroke.
After running, marching, running and marching you get to know parts of your body that weren't there before, cause they hurt big time. And everything is so damn heavy eventhough we are supplied with the last equipment that was issued in the German forces. Eventhough our gun (G36) one of the newest weapons on the market.
The schedules for our instructions are always wrong and you never know what comes next and how to dress. half of the bataillon is in Cosovo and so ther's only a few instructors left from 5th company that take care of the recruits. Even our Captain is down there and so we are lead by the Captain of 4th company. Everything is improvised but it somehow works always. 8 to 10 minutes for meals and everything tastes the same.
So that's it. My first impressions. At last: I'm kinda confident that my relationship with Patricia works out - we'll see. It's hard after not seeing a woman for ten days in a row . . .
I'd be very happy to get (snail) mail at the base until end of October:
Jaeger SERWATY, Wolf 5./FschPzAbwBtl 272 (My instructor asked us to tell our female friends Wittekind Kaserne to use red envelopes and parfume the letters, so Dr. Pickart Str. 6 he can appreciate it too, us getting mail!!) 27793 Wildeshausen Germany
